OPEN HOUSE FOR REAL ESTATE ~ SATURDAY, MARCH 12TH FROM 12-3PM
We are pleased to offer a historic mid 18th and 19th Century Schaefferstown
limestone property with important historic provenance retaining significant
architectural elements. The home has served as a trading post; Hebrew
School; tavern; store; post office; and a private residence. The Mid
18th Century portion of the house consists of 4 large rooms retaining
approximately 90% of the architectural elements including four arched corner
fireplaces with molded step-down mantles; built in corner cupboard
with butterfly shelves; chair rail; deep windows with trim; raised
panel doors/HL hardware; wide random floors and some crown molded ceiling
trim. A 5th room provides for bathroom facilities through a hallway
which allows passage to a full attic area. The 19th Century addition
provides a large living area; a pleasant kitchen-dining area which extends
into an attached summer house with fireplace. Two additional bathrooms
and bedrooms along with a full attic compliment the main living area.
Access to our attached garage is provided through the basement level.
The property rests on a deep lot in a quiet picturesque neighborhood which
is compatible for a complete restoration of this valuable historic
structure.
The deed to the original portion of this house connects to several prominent
18th Century personages; Benjamin and David Chew, James Morris, and
George Bryan. Benjamin Chew was the 1st Chief Justice of the Province
of Pennsylvania while Bryan was notorious for his antipathy to the English
form of Government. In 1758 Alexander Schaeffer, the founder of the
town, purchased the property. Successive ownerships returned the
property to the Schaeffer family in 1871 when it was purchased by Dr. Samuel
Schaeffer. The home has remained in the Schaeffer family since that
time.
